Tom Long is Appointed President of a New Non-Profit, Selling Young People On Success
OAK PARK, ILLINOIS – Selling
Young People On Success (SYPOS) is a not-for-profit organization whose mission
is to help young people be successful in school and in life. Our motto is: “Everyone Needs a Mentor”.
The schools
in which we work are suffering from high drop out rates, struggling with
low-test scores and overwhelmed with an influx of students needing extensive
varieties of help. The key to SYPOS is
Dimensional Mentoringä, a unique approach to mentoring based on proven techniques used
in business.
Students we
mentor, most often graduate from high school and go on to college or other
education. They also actively seek to
help other students achieve success by often becoming mentors themselves.
One of our
key goals is to keep students in school and this past year we succeeded in
keeping each of our mentees in school for the entire year.
Sullivan
High School in Rogers Park currently has a dropout rate of 70% and last year we
mentored 9 seniors at Sullivan each of whom went on to college. This year we mentored 32 students at
Sullivan: from freshmen to
seniors. Next year we will mentor over
60 students at Sullivan, 10 at Armstrong Elementary and 12 at Roosevelt High
School.
A good
adult mentor prospect is a mature, successful person who cares about young
people and is willing to devote at least four hours per month during the school
year in one-on-one mentoring.
